Book Review: How To Grow by Darryl Dash
Every christian wants to grow in their relationship with Jesus and their knowledge of the Word. Hundreds of books have been written on the subject of spiritual growth, many of them would be practical step by step plans for how to accomplish that type of growth. So the question must be asked, “Why another book on spiritual growth?” The answer is that this book takes the focus of our spiritual growth off of ourselves and places it on Christ and what He has done for us. This is a book about savoring Jesus and how that practically works out in the life of the beleiver.
Yes, there are strategies and plans in this book on how to follow Jesus in a closer and more personal way, but Dash’s main thrust is that we would set our affections on Jesus. Without this any plan or strategy will fail. Dash helps the reader to understand that there is nothing mystical or extraordinary about spiritual growth, but as he writes, “Spiritual maturity isn’t about living our best lives now; it’s about living ordinary lives that become extraordinary because of the way that we love God and others.” (148) This book is full of the Gospel and rightly shows that it is the Gospel that drives us to spiritual maturity. I look forward to many more books from this new author.
