H.B. Charles Jr. has quickly become one of my favorite authors. His book, On Preaching, was one of the most helpful books that I have read on expositional preaching. On Pastoring does the exact same thing with a broader topic of pastoral ministry. H.B. takes a very practical look at the daily tasks, struggles, and motivations in ministry. While he only gives a few basic thoughts about a subject, his biggest help for the reader is found in his stories. He not only knows the right answer, but he has lived it. This is the most beneficial aspect of this book. This is a book on pastoring by a pastor who has been and continues to be in trenches with the reader. I would highly encourage anyone to pick up this short read along with H.B.’s On Preaching.
