What Does the Sovereignty of God Offer the Christian

I know, even as you read that title you got a little scared, didn’t you? For many Christians the sovereignty of God is a difficult topic to discuss. They hear the word ”sovereignty”and rush to an argument regarding a certain Reformer from Geneva, yet the sovereignty of God is a deep-rooted truth in God’s Word. Psalm 115:3 says, “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” Job tells God, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” in Job 42:2. Isaiah prophecies, “Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.” Paul gives a beautiful doxology in I Timothy 6:15, “Which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords..” The list goes on and on.

The sovereignty of God is the outworking of His omnipotence. As ArthurW. Pink states in his remarkable work on the subject, “To say that God is sovereign is to declare that God is God, To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Most High, doing according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth, so that non can stay His hand or say unto Him what doest Thou? (Dan. 4:25). To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Almighty, the Possessor of all power in heaven and earth, so that none can defeat His counsels, thwart His purpose, or resist His will (Ps. 115:3).”

The sovereignty of God is one of the most beautiful of God’s attributes. It means that no one can overpower God, His purposes, or will. This one theological point regarding God’s nature has incredible implications for the Christian. Here are three benefits of the sovereignty of God in the life of the Christian:

The sovereignty of God states that God is in complete control. The same God who loves you and shows mercy to you time and time again is the same God who rules over circumstance in your life. As I teach my sons nearly every night, “God is faithful and God is good, so we can trust Him.” Since that same faithful and good God is also sovereign than I can live with real peace in knowing that whatever happens to me, God is sovereign. I don’t have to worry or think it’s about my efforts, but I can rest in the sovereignty of God and trust Him.

That sovereign God who is in complete control over the universe is the loving Father tot he Christian. What confidence that should give us! He is with you no matter what and He is not some incapable help - He is the sovereign God of the universe. As Paul states in Romans 8:31, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” You can rest assured that you are in Good hands and know that whatever God has called you to do, He is capable of helping you accomplish His will in your life.

The fact that no one has the ability to thwart God’s plans should fill us with adoration. Think about how incredibly powerful God is and then remember that His plan was to send Jesus to die for your sins. He chose you. He loves you. Isn’t this sovereign God amazing? Think about Him, sit and meditate on the incredible divine nature of God as shown through His sovereignty. Glorify Him for His sovereignty over the affairs of men.

The sovereignty of God is a wonderful encouragement to the Christian. It says that God is in control and I am not. It says that God is God and acts as God. The sovereignty of God gives us peace, confidence, and fills us with awe for this Holy and Sovereign King of Kings.
