Book Review – The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice

Book Review – The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice

The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice is widely-known to be the gold standard on understanding the parables and after reading it I now know why. Boice thinks through each parable with clarity and direction. An easy mistake when reading the parables its to get lost with the cultural details, but Boice seldom falls into this trap. He understands that exegeting a parable requires a proper understanding of the occasion, the cultural details, and the desired outcome.

Each parable is studied thoroughly and explained as though it was being preached to the reader. Boice proves himself to be a teacher in his writing. It’s clear and concise instruction on how to think through the parable. While I don’t always agree with how Boice interprets a parable, I can know that he studied it diligently. I have used The Parables of Jesus as one of my main resources for my current sermon series at my church. There is so much wisdom in this book to be drawn out for the reader.

A clear example of the incredible work Boice put into writing this resource is shown in his understanding of the Narrow Door in Luke 13. While some commentaries overwhelm the reader, Boice breaks down this parable into such easy and understandable terms. He even gives a clear and accurate outline for the reader. “I break it down into three parts: 1. there is only one door, and it is a narrow one; 2. that door is now open, though it will one day close; and 3. our duty is to enter it.”(p. 91) Any Christian will find this book to be valuable in their study of the parables.
