FBC Post: 10 Uncommon Reasons Christ Died For Us

Easter is here! It’s an exciting time for Christians as we celebrate how our Savior conquered death itself to rescue us from our sin. Many of us understand the meaning of Easter, but I wonder how deep our knowledge of why Christ had to die goes? This goes beyond the simple, but true, answer that He died on the cross because He loved us and wanted to save us from our sins. There are so many reasons, but today I will focus on 10 uncommon reasons Christ died on the cross.

Christ died on the cross…

1. To Learn Obedience

It’s not that Jesus did not understand obedience, rather God the Son had never had an opportunity to show such humility and deference to the Father until fulfilling the Father’s will by going through the redemptive plan created before the foundation of the earth as outlined in Philippians 2 and Ephesians 1. God obeyed God and died for man.

2. To Fulfill the Law’s Demand

The Law, according to Galatians, was a guardian. It was there to hold man’s hand and show us the meaning of sin. Man was then indebted to the law, having to obey each aspect of the law. Paul even says that we were enslaved to the Law, that is until Christ came and fulfilled the Law we could not keep and paid the price we could not pay to give us the freedom we do not deserve.

3. To end Rituals

Since we are no longer under the Law, we now have freedom from the rituals of the Law. This would include such things as eating certain foods and the act of circumcision. These are no longer required to be under the covenant, because Christ fulfilled the Law and established a new Covenant with his own blood.

4. To unite all people

Jews and Gentiles, for thousands of years the “wall of hostility” was up as Paul says in Ephesians. There was a prejudice and hostility toward different races, but through the death of Jesus Christ, He has brought down that wall and enables us to have peace with all men through the Gospel.

5. To help us mortify sin

As Christ died on the cross and rose again, so must we die to our sin. We mortify or put to death our sin and act in newness of life granted to us through belief in Christ. Christians are no longer enslaved to sin and are then to slay their sin and pursue righteousness. I Peter 2:24, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

6. To give marriage purpose

Paul states in Ephesians 5 that marriage is a mystery. It had purpose in the Old Testament that people just did not understand until it was clarified through the death of Jesus Christ. It’s a beautiful picture of the love Christ has for the church and the depths of love displayed through His sacrifice to save her. The church then submits to Christ. This is how husbands and wives are to act in their marriage – to show the beauty of the Gospel.

7. To reveal the Gospel

Paul in Romans 1:16 that “the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation…” This power of the Gospel is only revealed through the death of Christ. If it were not for His death, there would be no good news to share and no power in it.

8. To Show the sovereignty of God

The salvation plan was set before the foundations of the earth. God orchestrated all of history to get Jesus to that cross to pay the price for our sin. That’s an incredible thought. Just contemplate how your plans are ruined at the slightest miscalculation, but God’s will is perfect and what He desires will occur. God is sovereign through the death of Christ.

9. To give us joyful hope

This Friday is called Good Friday, not because it’s a fun day but because of the sacrifice of Christ and what it means for those who believe in Jesus. We will one day be with Christ forever. We get to be with the One who redeemed us through His loving sacrifice. “What wondrous love is this?”

10. To give us life

Ephesians 2 begins by describing the spiritual state of man apart from Christ – dead. But through the sacrifice of Christ, man can be made alive. Not only that but man can now live a life that is pleasing to God through Jesus Christ.

There are many more reasons why Christ died for you. Contemplate on those reasons this Easter. Give glory to God for what He has done for those who would call on the name of the Lord for salvation.
